Glossary of Terms

Assemblies
The putting together of manufactured parts to make a complete product.
CNC Milling
CNC is short for Computer Numerical Control -it refers to a computer "controller" that reads instructions and drives the machine tool. CNC's are able to perform precision cuts reliably in machine shop settings. Most machine shops would have CNC lathes, CNC routers, CNC milling machines, etc.
CNC Punching Machines
CNC Sheet Metal Punching Defined. CNC Sheet metal punching in metal fabrication is the process of using a machine to press a shape through a sheet of metal and into a die to create the desired shape in the metal.
CNC Turning
Turning is a machining process in which a cutting tool, typically a non-rotary tool bit, describes a helical toolpath by moving more or less linearly while the workpiece rotates. The tool's axes of movement may be literally a straight line, or they may be along some set of curves or angles, but they are essentially linear.
Cutting
The action of cutting something.
Fabrication
The action or process of manufacturing or inventing something.
Finish
The final appearance of the metal ie, satin, painted, plated, polished etc.
Forging
A metal forming process which a billet with carefully controlled volume is deformed (hot or cold) by a punch in order to fill a die cavity.
Forming
Making any change in the shape of a metal piece which does not intentionally reduce the metal thickness and which produces a useful shape.
Gauge
The thickness of sheet or the diameter of wire. The various standards are arbitrary and differ with regard to ferrous and nonferrous products as well as sheet and wire.
Grinding
To crush, pulverize, or reduce to powder by friction, especially by rubbing between two hard surfaces.
ISO9001
ISO 9001 is an international standard that gives requirements for an organization's quality management system (QMS).
Laser Cutting
Laser cutting is a precise method of cutting a design from a given material using a CAD file to guide it.
Machining
Make or operate on with a machine.
Manufacturing
The process of converting raw materials, components, or parts into finished goods that meet a customer's expectations or specifications.
Map
A simplified detail print or sketch usually showing just the location and sizes of holes in a detail or steel.
Mechanical Press
A forging press with an inertia flywheel, a crank and clutch, or other mechanical device to operate the ram.
Powder Coating
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form.
Press
A machine having a stationary bed or anvil and a slide (ram or hammer) which has a controlled reciprocating motion toward and away from the bed surface and at right angle to it. The slide is guided in the frame of the machine to give a definite path of motion.
Pressbrake
A press brake, also known as a brake press, is a machine tool for bending sheet and plate material, most commonly sheet metal. It forms predetermined bends by clamping the workpiece between a matching punch and die. A HACO hydraulic press brake. Bending process.
Quality Management System
A quality management system (QMS) is a collection of business processes focused on achieving quality policy and quality objectives to meet customer requirements.
Rolling
Moving by turning over and over on an axis.
Sheet
Any material or piece of uniform thickness and of considerable length and width as compared to its thickness
Stamp
To impress lettering or designs by pressure into the surface of a material.
Sub Contract Services
A subcontractor is a business or person that caries out part or all of the work for another persons contract.
Tolerance
The permissible deviation from a specified value of a structural dimension, often expressed as a percent.
Welding
To join (metals) by applying heat, sometimes with pressure and sometimes with an intermediate or filler metal having a high melting point.
